"I'm a visual person"
I often hear people say they are "visual people" - but really, who isn't? Visuals can only help create the mental image that words alone cannot. One of the most underutilized artforms is Visual Communications, especially in today's world where our culture is becoming more reliant on complex technologies. However, the gap between communicating and comprehending the use of these complex technologies is widening. As a result, the acceptance and use of these technologies by the average person also slows to a crawl. From blinking VCR clocks to abandoned e-commerce shopping carts, making technology easy to understand and use is vital to the success of any technology-related business.
Unfortunately, for many companies, by the time they realize they need to rethink their marketing message or their product design or their website design - it's often too late.
Think Different
Before the iPod there was no shortage of MP3 players on the market yet the iPod came along and crushed them all. Why? Not because the iPod was technically better than all the other product - they all play music - but because Apple baked design into every aspect of its product. From the design of the product itself to the design of its marketing. It was all about visually communicating how easy it was to use the product.
What is "Good Design"?
Successfully communicating a message, idea or function may be the ultimate definition of “good design” A good design can often be proven based on test results – not just aesthetic opinions. I often work with clients that have strong opinions about how things should or should not be desiged. When they ask me for my opinion, I often say my opinion is that my opion doesn't matter because we should test the designs to make sure we choose the right one. Wouldn't you rather base the decisions of how your online shopping cart is designed on whether your customers can complete their orders or not? In fact, a good design often goes unnoticed and doesn't get in the way. Have you ever driven from Point A to Point B and gotten lost? If you have, you probably had a few choice words to say about how horrible the street signs or highways were designed. If you were able to simply arrive at your destination without getting lost, you probably never gave much thought to the design of anything because it was never a factor.
It's not that good designs can't look good - it's that terrible designs can look good. The ideal design is one that both looks good and is easy to use.
“Visually communicating ideas and making things easy to use”. It’s not just a fancy tagline – it’s what we do.
