Making the complex seem simple.

Have you ever struggled to use a website, got lost while driving or couldn’t figure out how a product worked? The examples are endless. When websites, marketing messages, products or even traffic signs are poorly designed people quickly become confused and frustrated. Sound familiar?

Visually communicating a message, idea or function successfully is, perhaps, the ultimate definition of great design. The process of achieving a great design, however, is not as simple as some would think. A great deal of thought and effort needs to go into creating a successful design, yet, if a design is good it often goes unnoticed by its users. This is mainly because most people will only take notice of a design when it is bad or if it gets in their way. Have you ever arrived at a destination and said to yourself "hey, whoever designed those street signs really made it easy for me". Most people will perceive the process to be easy and not think that design had much to do with it. In fact, in many case this should probably be true. The reality is that many things are not designed well, which makes the seemingly easy process become overly complex and difficult.

Research has also proven that a person’s perception and trust of a company’s brand is directly effected by not only its aesthetic appeal but how clear they communicate their message and how easy to use their products are. For a web-based company, this can mean converting browsers into buyers, reducing helpdesk costs and promoting repeat use. For a product-based company, this can mean choosing one company’s product over another not because it has more features but because it is simply easier to use. For a service-based company, this can mean hiring a company because they made you feel confident that they were more capable of providing the service than a competitor.
